Guang Ming Daily reported that a man in Shanghai allegedly claimed that he was given a lower bonus this year because his female superior did not like how he looked.
The man, who worked in the information technology department in a company, said he found this out from several messages the superior had sent to a friend.
He alleged that the superior had told her friend that many customers shied away because he was ugly.
The man, who injured his nose in a road accident when he was a teenager, posted screenshots of the messages onto the microblogging site Weibo.
It was learnt that the company eventually gave him more bonuses and transferred him to another department.
Asked by reporters whether the incident was true, the superior said that the question was pointless.
