Singaporean arrested in Vietnam for locking girlfriend in hotel room

A Singaporean was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday for locking his Vietnamese girlfriend in a hotel room after a dispute.

Thanh Nien News reported that the police will charge 41-year-old Eng Yong Kit with "illegally detaining a person against their will".

It said that police responded to a report that Eng was keeping his 24-year-old girlfriend in a hotel room, and broke into the room when Eng refused to release the woman.

According to Vietnamese news outlet Anninh Thudo, the stand-off between Eng and the police lasted for about eight hours. The incident reportedly started at about 12.30am and the police broke into the room at about 9am.

It also said that officers from the Consulate General of Singapore in the city were called in to mediate.
