Snowfall spotted in rare regions as Taiwan seizes white December

TAIPEI - Snow fell on many mountain areas in Taiwan yesterday and the Central Weather Bureau (CWB, 中央氣象局) pointed out that there is another chance for snow in the near future as the current cold air mass over Taiwan will remain for three days.

Not only the island's highest mountains, such as Yushan (玉山) and Hehuan Mountain (合歡山) experienced snowfall, but some middle-altitude mountain regions below 2,000 meters, such as Taiping Mountain (太平山), Jianshi Township (尖石鄉) and Lalashan (拉拉山), also saw snow. In Taiwan's subtropical climate, it is very uncommon to see snow in such areas. Many tourists who happened to visit these places were amazed and surprised.

According to the CWB, yesterday's snowfall was the first seen on Taiping Mountain this year and the biggest in two years. The snowfall started in the early morning and continued until 4 a.m. yesterday, accumulating to a depth of over 3 cm.

Finding that their playground was covered in snow yesterday morning, the students of Shin Guang Elementary School (新光國小), located in Jianshi Township, happily bounded outside to make snowmen.

Yesterday's snow was also welcomed by visitors elsewhere.

"It is the best Christmas and New Year's present," expressed tourists on Hehuan Mountain. Yesterday's snowfall was also the largest on Hehuan Mountain this year.
