Sri Lankan lawmaker arrested for fraud

Parliamentarian Sarana Gunawardena was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday afternoon over an alleged financial fraud.

Police Media Unit (PMU) said Gunawardena was yesterday summoned to the CID to give a statement over an alleged fraud of Rs. 9.6 million (S$130,300) which he was said to have taken from a businessman to supply steel.

Former Deputy Minister of Petroleum Industries Gunawardena was released on bail on the orders of Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya last month over another case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

In that case he was released on cash bail of Rs. 150,000 and a surety of Rs.60 million by Magistrate Pilapitiya.

The PMU said that the MP had been produced before the Attanagalle Magistrate yesterday evening and remanded till March 23.

When CID director, SSP B.R.S.R. Nagahamulla was asked whether the Speaker had been informed of the arrest of the MP, he answered in the affirmative.
