Swan struck by arrow prompts police investigation

KAWAJIMA, Saitama - A whistling swan has been found with a crossbow arrow protruding from its chest at a river in Saitama Prefecture.

The swan, which was found at the Oppegawa river in Kawajima on Friday, was still alive but in an extremely weak condition. The Higashi-Matsuyama prefectural environmental administration office has taken the swan into its protection.

Higashi-Matsuyama Police Station has begun an investigation on suspicion of violation of the wildlife protection law.

The arrow, about 55 centimeters in length, penetrated the bird's chest near its legs.
