TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly staging car accidents to make money, Taipei police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Lin, 55, would demand NT$1,000 (S$43) to NT$20,000 from drivers whose cars hit his taxi in accidents that he staged, police said.
Lin has allegedly staged 74 accidents over the past few years, police added.
According to police, in order to cause accidents Lin would often deliberately accelerate when other cars were moving into his lane or turning in front of his taxi.
Police started an investigation after receiving complaints from some of his victims. Lin has been booked on extortion and fraud charges.
