Teachers arrested for stealing McDonald's statue

TAIPEI - Two foreigners were arrested by police last Saturday for allegedly stealing a Ronald McDonald statue at a mall in southeastern Pingtung city, local media reported yesterday.

According to local media reports, witnesses called Pingtung City police on Aug. 16 after they saw two foreigners, apparently drunk, carrying the statue.

Video footage of the mall's CCTV shows the two suspects of removing the statue that was originally standing outside the fast food chain store at the mall.

They even posted photographs with the statue before they took it away and put it in front of Pingtung stadium, reports said.

Police later arrested two foreign suspects that were allegedly involved in the case. The two foreigners identified themselves as English teachers in the city and told police that they abducted the statue because they are anti-fast food activists.

They are now facing theft charges.
