Workers examine the head of the Great Buddha of Kamakura to make a record of its damage in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Thursday.

Designated as a national treasure, the Amitabha Buddha bronze statue is undergoing full-scale maintenance for the first time in a half-century.

The current examination includes checking for scratches and stains, and X-ray analysis of rust on the surface.
