Thai zoo tries to get panda pregnant again

Chiang Mai Zoo is hoping to celebrate the birth of a second giant panda after New Year 2014 following the insemination of Lin Hui with sperm from Chuang Chuang.

The mother and father of Lin Ping are on loan from China. Zoo director Thanapat Pongpamorn said yesterday that the insemination of Lin Hui was carried out on Saturday and Sunday.

The team had experience and the ability to make Lin Hui pregnant with a second baby panda, he said.

Boripat Siriaroonrat, assistant director of the Bureau of Conservation Research and Education, said the research team had the best plan for completing the artificial insemination and Chuang Chuang's sperm was of high quality.

The only thing that the researchers were anxious about was this month is not a time when pandas are in heat.
