Thailand donates 5,000 tonnes rice to Philippines

BANGKOK - Thailand has donated 5,000 tonnes of rice from government stocks to the typhoon-hit Philippines and is considering selling more rice to Manila, the government spokesman said on Tuesday.

"The 5,000 tonnes rice will be shipped to Manila this week with medical suppliers and doctors," government spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi told Reuters.

He said Thailand was considering selling rice to the Philippines which has said it will import up to 500,000 tonnes to replenish dwindled stocks after being hit by supertyphoon Haiyan.
