Tokyo Station square to have new look ahead of 2020 Olympics

East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced Wednesday that it will begin a large-scale renovation of the square in front of Tokyo Station's Marunouchi side and its basement area ahead of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo.

According to JR East, a 6,500-square-meter space for pedestrians and two "traffic squares," which will be used as taxi stands and bus stops, will be created in the square, which leads to the Imperial Palace. New ticket gates will be installed and a large concourse will be built in the 4,500-square-meter basement area.

The renovation work is scheduled to be completed in summer 2017, JR East said.
