A steam locomotive in the guise of Thomas the Tank Engine, the title character in a popular British TV series, was shown to the press on Wednesday morning.

Pulling a train with about 70 children from a local nursery school aboard, the locomotive ran about 40 kilometers on a line operated by Oigawa Railway in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture.

The C11-227 model steam locomotive manufactured in 1942, was decorated by placing a mask of the character's face on its front and by painting the main body blue.

The Thomas locomotive will be operated from July 12 through October 12.
