Two killed after climbing structure collapses under tourists' weight

Two people were killed and at least 15 were injured in Zhejiang Province on Tuesday when a netted structure they were climbing on collapsed.

According to Shanghaiist, visitors to an annual flower gala had climbed the structure to get a better view during a performance, until there were more than 50 people on it.

Footage broadcast by China Central TV (CCTV) shows the moment when the structure collapsed, sending some visitors flying and crushing others under its weight.

Rescue workers quickly sent the injured to hospital, but one victim was killed on the spot and another died later despite receiving medical treatment.

Estimates on the number of injured vary; CCTV puts the number as 15 while Shanghaiist estimates 48.

While the structure is used for outdoor climbing activities, a witness interviewed by CCTV speculated that the combined weight of the tourists on one side was too much for it to bear, and it collapsed due to uneven stress.
