Woman feels the heat in dowry harassment
Iron rod.

A man and his mother are among four people facing charges in Indore, north India, for allegedly forcing his wife to prove her chastity in front of a village council by holding red-hot iron rods.

Makkal Osai quoted her lawyer Santosh Khoware as saying that his client Poonam married Kunal Oatkar on Dec 13, 2007.

After some time, her husband and her in-laws allegedly pressed for Rs200,000 (S$11,000) dowry and started harassing her physically and mentally.

They questioned her behaviour, besides demanding that she prove her chastity.

When Poonam and her parents refused their request, the village council head ordered for a boycott of the family from all functions.
