Beijing - Police had to be called after a woman at a train station in north-eastern China took apart an ATM, which she claimed had swallowed her card.

The woman, who is suspected to be mentally ill, yanked at the cash dispensing machine for about 10 minutes in Changchun, in Jilin province, before she managed to rip off the front, the China Youth Daily reported.

She then asked passers-by to help her find her card after taking out some of the machine's parts, but not before one man at the station convinced her into shouting at the machine at one point to get her card to come out.

Several people called the police and the woman was taken to hospital for checks.

Apparently, she had gone to the same ATM two months ago and had started putting small objects into the card slot in an attempt to retrieve her ATM card.

The China Youth Daily quoted a staff member at the ATM's issuing bank as expressing surprise that the woman was able to rip off the front of the machine.

A similar incident was reported in Guangdong province last year, when a woman who claimed that her bank card was swallowed by an ATM dismantled it.
