Women's football fans spark ticket chaos in Mandalay

MANDALAY - Thousands of fans cramped up in line for several hours yesterday to buy tickets to see a women's football match between Myanmar and Vietnam at the 27th Sea Games.

Tickets were sold at two venues Ba Htoo Stadium and the Sports and Physical Education Institute since 9 am. Although thousands of fans spent many hours jostling for the tickets, many had to leave empty handed.

"I have been waiting since 6 am to buy the tickets. As first we were standing in line, but then it became crowded and everyone started jostling. Some women even fainted due to lack of air in the crowd. The security police themselves had to control the crowd and buy the tickets for them from the ticket counter. Some people standing far from the ticket counter asked those standing near the counter to buy the tickets for them, but there weren't any more tickets left and they didn't get their money back," said a young man who came to buy the tickets at Ba Htoo Stadium.

The tickets worth Ks 1,000 each had been resold for Ks 10,000 to the fans that were standing in line.

"I have been waiting outside the Sports and Physical Education Institute since around 3 am. After the tickets were sold for 30 minutes, they announced that the tickets were sold out so the people waiting in line got angry and some climbed the walls. The Minister of Social Welfare and security police arrived to handle the crowds," said an information officer of Mandalay region.
