3 ways to jumpstart your career in 2016

How successful has last year been for you, in terms of your career?

Some people feel disengaged with their jobs. But, who knows, the new year might be the right time to start over. Even so, you can always try to work things out in your current job.

The holiday season perhaps made you a bit lazy so it might be a good time now to ignite your passion for work by looking into these three areas.

1. GO TO INDUSTRY EVENTS

You might not be new in the industry you are in and could have been to many industry events in the past.

There is a big chance that you hardly go to such events now - you might have been too busy at work.

Our advice? Just go. Make some time to attend as many industry events as possible, especially if you are in a fast-growing industry.

You have to be updated and you can meet many people in the same industry for possible collaborations. Also, someone you meet at such events could affect your career greatly later.

2. RENEW YOUR RESUME

New year, new resume. What have you done last year? Do not forget to include your recent achievements or new skills.

Remember, you should update your resume at least once a year. So, touch up your resume to welcome a new year.

Anyone will find it harder to recall all of his notable accomplishments from the past. If you have years of shining experiences, your resume should tell.

Also, if you work in an industry where visual prowess matters, consider trying an infographic-style resume which is popular these days.

You should not let your resume be old and boring, right?

3. TRIM YOUR WORK SCHEDULE

Get over your hectic workday.

You might have been busy with endless tasks in the past but there is a big chance that you prioritised those tasks wrongly. Most of us say "yes" to everything and then keep forgetting our main tasks.

This habit is not good as you will keep striving to do everything and might rarely succeed. Many who do this cannot devote their full attention to their work and eventually burn out, which leads to frustration, guilt and anger.

The only way to fix this problem is to reset your schedule.

List only the top five professional priorities you have to focus on.

It is better to do five things than trying to do 25. When you are unable to finish a seemingly endless list of tasks, you will not get any credit for it and will likely be distracted from finishing your most important work.
