Gym operator California Fitness will shut its Orchard branch on Feb 15. A notice posted yesterday to members and guests of the gym, on Level 8 of Ngee Ann City, said the decision was made due to "variable business strategies and decisions".
California Fitness has three other branches here - in Bugis, Novena and Raffles Place - which remain open.
A spokesman told The Straits Times: "We have to make some strong business decisions and strategies long-term to serve the Singapore community better."
California Fitness has occupied the Ngee Ann City premises since 2011, when it relocated from Orchard Building. The company said its lease for the outlet is due to expire "soon".
The gym notice added: "We apologise if this transition may cause some inconvenience to our members and guests."
Existing members have been asked to collect their belongings by Feb 14.
Those unable to do so will be able to collect them from the Bugis branch by March 15, after which all uncollected items will be donated to charity.
Members were surprised by the closure.
Visual merchandising manager Rizal Khusaine, 45, who works at the same building, frequents the Orchard outlet at least five times a week.
He said: "Usually, I can just go a few floors down to the gym before or after work. It will not be as convenient now travelling to the other outlets."
