Clever use of colour give family's Punggol condo an eye-catching look

Who: A couple and their two young daughters

Home: Four-bedroom executive condominium unit in Punggol

Size: 1,200sqf

The team from Sponge transformed the new executive condominium unit of Mr and Mrs Teoh by giving it a light and airy feel with a contemporary look. Now, it features a theme based on light wood tones and white, accentuated with crisp, black lines - an understated combination with defining details.

But what really stands out is the designer's clever use of colour and materials on the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the carpentry.

A spacious open-concept living area welcomes guests into the home, and the ceiling has been designed to help zone the space with varying heights and distinctive details.

The long "timber" ceiling panel is a design feature that draws the eye from the home's entrance through the living space, to the master bedroom at the end of the corridor. "This creates flow throughout the home, emphasising its spaciousness and creating design continuity," says one of the designers.

This key element may have the appearance of wood, but is actually finished with a realistic lookalike wallcovering from Goodrich Global!

In contrast, the ceiling above the sitting area is a grid of black wood strips - a design that relates to that of the built-in storage cabinets and dining counter in the dry kitchen area. There, the ceiling has been painted a burnt orange, cosying up the cool monochromatic palette.

In the master bedroom, a black and white nature-inspired wallcovering was installed, offering graphic contrast to the wood tones and warm colours of the space.

When it came to space planning, the designer maximised the size of the dry kitchen. An island counter was replaced by a custom-made counterheight dining table, allowing the homeowners to do away with a conventional dining table. Going with a practical approach, and using only a few simple colours and materials, this home has been infused with character and a consistent design scheme.
