WHO: A family of five

HOME: A three-storey semi-detached house

SIZE: 4,500sqf (built-up)

Winston and Clara, a couple in their 40s, reside in this three-storey semi-detached house with their two daughters and Winston's father. "We built this house with everyone in mind; we want everyone to feel comfortable here," says Winston.

The couple tapped into the creative mind of Selina Tay, founder and principal designer of Collective Designs, in designing this home to cater to three generations.

"We wanted the house to have a classic look," explains Selina on the restrained colour scheme that pervades the interiors, through the walls, floors and built-in pieces.

A tasteful curation of furniture from high-end Italian brands such as B&B Italia, Maxalto, Poliform and Poltrona Frau - hand-picked by the couple during a business trip to Italy - enhances its timeless style. "I appreciate good furniture design," says Winston, who has a penchant for quiet, timeless aesthetics.

The high-ceilinged ground floor was identified as the household's public and social domain meant for entertaining guests or spending time together as a family. There are no private rooms on the ground floor; instead, there's a large living and dining space with an open dry kitchen. The family members spend most of their time in this space, together - even when they are doing their own thing. "When Clara and I come back [from work], we gather here with the kids to chit-chat," says Winston.

The family's private quarters are located on the second and third storeys. En-suite bedrooms for the grandfather and each of the two daughters, a study, and a smaller living area make up the second floor. On the third storey, the couple retreats into their own private space with an en-suite bedroom, media room, small pantry and patio.

Having moved in for less than a year, Winston is still trying to decide which is his favourite spot in this much-larger dwelling (the family was previously living in a three-room condominium). While he enjoys reading in his personal media room, the wine lover also relishes time spent with his family on the ground floor, watching television and sipping on a glass of red.
