SINGAPORE - Taxi company SMRT has entered the private hire car business, pitching itself against Uber with a new limousine, chauffeuring and car rental service called Strides.
Launched today (April 18), Strides is a wholly owned subsidiary of SMRT Taxis. For a start, the company has signed a one-year partnership with GrabCar, where up to 200 drivers with Strides can register to take bookings exclusively via the Grab app. This will enable them to enjoy additional performance-related cash incentives from GrabCar, on top of Strides' own performance-related incentives.
Strides' fleet includes luxury vehicles such as the Lexus ES Hybrid and Toyota Vellfire for its limousine services, and 300 new Toyota Altis sedans, which will be progressively rolled out, for its chauffeured and car rental services.
According to Mr Benny Lim, Managing Director for SMRT Roads, this partnership plugs the "growing preference amongst commuters for on-demand point-to-point transportation".
Mr Lim Kell Jay, Head of Grab Singapore, added that the partnership "will draw on the expertise and technology that both parties offer, expanding the avaliable driver supply pool for commuters with brand new vehicles, while also enabling drivers to have access to increased bookings, competitive rental rates, and professional training and support".
