Not many homeowners have the luxury of a double-volume space in their flat, so Goh Rong Yi and her husband, wanted to take full advantage of this feature in their three-bedroom unit at Eight Riversuites, and further accentuate it, too.

Their designer, Keave Lim of Eightytwo, created a visual statement in the home through the addition of a spiral staircase, which is used to connect the lower floor with the newly created loft level. This style of staircase also helps to save space.

For a liveable and cosy abode, Keave clad the walls throughout the living and dining area with strips of solid honey-hued white oak placed in a herringbone pattern. The wood wall also helps lead the eye upwards and enhances the height of the living room space.

The natural light that streams into the home from the two levels of windows adds to the interiors' warm and welcoming ambience.

"As the rest of the home is in a lighter hue, I chose a matte black finish for the staircase for contrast," explains Keave.

Says Rong Yi: "My husband and I really like Keave's design concept. Many guests have complimented the staircase, too."

Part of the approximately $50,000 renovation cost included the wall-to-wall shelving on the new 54sqf loft level. Keave designed the shelving as a series of nonstandard-sized boxes - a design feature in its own right, complemented by the family's collection of model planes and cars.

The designer worked his magic in the master bedroom and study room on the lower level, as well.

Instead of positioning the bed frame against the wall in the master bedroom, Keave created a slanted headboard design which doubles as a low partition between the bed and the mini "walk-in" wardrobe.

The study is done up in restful shades of powder blue and greys. Wall shelving, with an unconventional design, makes the space look modern and smart, which fits perfectly with the style of this contemporary home.
