Works to draw more to Chinatown's Smith Street result in... and up to 80% in lost business
The hoarding along Smith Street for the revamp of Chinatown Food Street, has discouraged customers and tourists from venturing into the shops further in. Businesses in the shophouses say poor access, ventilation and lighting have sent business plunging by up to 80 per cent since the closure on 1 May 2013. Eight affected shops petition the government for improvements and compensation.
