A male doctor has been accused of raping a female patient after giving her a sedative at a hospital in Chengdu, China.

The 27-year-old woman said she had sought treatment at a private clinic there for underarm odour on May 10.

She was taken into a treatment room without a nurse to act as a chaperone, local media reported.

When the woman woke from sedation an hour later, she felt pain in her genitals and questioned her doctor.

He reportedly asked to settle the matter privately with her but she refused his offer.

The doctor fled the scene after the patient said she was going to make a police report.

Local police said on Wednesday (May 24) that they received a call on May 10 about an alleged rape at Hengkang Hospital.

A 35-year-old suspect surnamed Luo was detained two days later.

Police say Luo has confessed to injecting the woman with a dose of sedative and raping her while she was unconscious.

When approached by reporters, the hospital spokesman declined to comment on the incident and said that they will comply with legal proceedings.
