Apple recalls older 15-inch MacBook Pros because its batteries could pose a fire safety risk

Take note if you bought a 15-inch MacBook Pro between September 2015 and February 2017. Apple has just issued a recall saying that select 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks sold during the above-mentioned period could have faulty batteries that may overheat and "pose a fire safety risk."

"Apple has determined that, in a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units, the battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk," wrote the company about its recall program.

"Affected units were sold primarily between September 2015 and February 2017 and product eligibility is determined by the product serial number."

The first step in remedying the issue is, of course, making sure that your unit is an actual 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Then confirm that the model is indeed the “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)” by looking for the About This Mac menu command, which can be found by clicking on that Apple symbol on the upper-left corner of the screen.

Should your laptop be eligible for repair (type in its serial number here), you’re advised to stop using it immediately, unfortunately. The good news is that Apple’s going to replace the battery for free! The bad news is that the fix could take some time, but hey, you’ll be prolonging the life of your trusty old MacBook Pro. Be sure to back up your data before sending the laptop in for service.

If it's eligible, you can do one of the following:

  • Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
  • Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store
  • Contact Apple Support to arrange mail-in service via the Apple Repair Center
