Apple's older iPad Air 2 is now S$120 cheaper than before - is it a good deal?

Apple has just announced their newest iPad, and instead of calling it the iPad Air 3, has named it the iPad Pro. Together with the announcement, Apple has also slashed the prices of the existing iPad Air 2 by S$120.

Is this a deal? It depends. Keep in mind that the iPad Air 2 is not last year's model, it's 2014's (Apple skipped an iPad Air refresh in 2015).

So while the iPad Air 2 is thinner and faster than the original iPad Air, it's running a two-year old A8X chip with 2GB of RAM. The new iPad Pros both run the A9X chip (1.8x faster than A8X) with 4GB of RAM.

Plus, the iPad Air 2 with 128GB is no longer available on Apple's store, and only the iPad Pros come with a new, larger 256GB capacity.

Of course, you pay for all that power and storage. The new 9.7" iPad Pro sees an increase in price over the iPad Air; both the 128GB Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi + Celluar models cost S$190 more.

For comparison's sake, the new iPad Pro with 32GB of storage and Wi-Fi costs S$898, more than the 64GB Wi-Fi iPad Air 2's launch price of S$828.

If you don't need all that power and storage though - and it's unlikely that you will, if all you do on your iPad Air is surf the internet and watch videos - then today's slash in price may make sense for you.

P.S. And if you want further bargains, there are always the refurbished iPads, which come with a one-year warranty from Apple.
