Comex's 20th-year extravaganza to include tech 'fashion' show

One of the largest consumer tech shows returns to town this week.

Into its 20th year, Comex will once again offer consumers hot deals and bargain buys for smartphones, television sets, laptops, tablets, cameras and other gadgets. But this year's event will be so much more.

Mr Eric Ng, head of marketing at Singapore Press Holdings' circulation division, said: "We are excited to roll out a new concept for Comex 2014 in celebration of the show's 20th anniversary."

For the first time in its long history, it will hold a tech "fashion" show, with models wearing and using the latest gadgets from brands such as Asus, Dell and HP.

Also new at the show is the tech showcase at level 4, where visitors can get hands-on with the latest gadgets, even ones that have not been launched here yet. They include the Google Glass and the Razer Nabu fitness tracker, which doubles as a smart watch.

There is also a Gamers' Hub, where enthusiasts can try their hands at the upcoming next-generation gaming console, Microsoft Xbox One, which will be launched next month.

During the show, gamers can pre-order the Xbox One and the new white PlayStation 4, which is also debuting next month.

Visitors to the show can take selfies with the models, upload the photos to Facebook or Instagram, and get a chance to win cash prizes.

The highly anticipated Microsoft Surface Pro 3 hybrid PC will start selling at the show. Home-grown audio company X-mini will also be showing off its new book-sized BlueTooth speaker called the X-mini Clear.

Newstead Technologies chief executive Mindy Tan said: "We are excited about the new activities lined up for Comex visitors. It is important for the organisers to look for novel ways to attract more visitors."

Organised by Exhibits Inc, a Singapore Press Holdings subsidiary, the four-day tech extravaganza will start Thursday at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, occupying levels 4 and 6 of the venue. Admission is free.
