Fortnite was almost cancelled by a former Epic Games director

Fortnite was almost cancelled by former Epic Games director of production Rob Fergusson, who admitted he wasn't a fan of the project in its earlier form.

Fergusson — who was previously director of production at the studio until 2012 — admitted he wanted to axe the project during his time at the company before the game had even become a battle royale title.

He told Game Informer: "If I stayed at Epic, I would have cancelled Fortnite. Absolutely. Before I left I tried to cancel Fortnite."

"When it was just 'Save the World', that was a project that had some challenges. As the director of production at the time, that game would not have passed my bar for something we should have continued to keep going."

Fergusson — who didn't expand on what the difficulties were with the development  — left the studio seven years ago to join Irrational Games to help with BioShock Infinite.

From there, he joined Microsoft when the tech giant bought Gears of War from Epic, and he is now fronting the Gears 5 studio The Coalition.

Fortnite was released half a decade after Fergusson left, and while it has become a huge success he doesn't have any hard feelings.

He added: "I'm super happy for their success... That game you love, the worldwide sensation, it would not exist had I stayed at Epic."
