Funds sought for lamp with levitating disc to take off
COOL FACTOR: The Lunaluxx lamp uses a levitating light-emitting disc instead of a bulb. The base price for a basic black or white Lunaluxx is $170.

Levitation has always been something of a visual treat.

That's one of the reasons why people want hoverboards so much.

Well, the Lunaluxx lamp isn't a hoverboard, but a part of it does hover.

The Lunaluxx, currently being funded on Kickstarter, is a lamp without a bulb. Instead, it uses a light-emitting disc which floats through the use of magnets.

The magnets make the disc levitate through a process called magnetic suspension.

The disc contains phosphor, a substance that can give off light under certain conditions.

An invisible blue LED at the base of the lamp shoots blue light at it, which the phosphor interacts with to re-emit white light.

The lamp's brightness supposedly never dims.

Lunaluxx's designer, Netherlands-based company Elivatix, claims that the lamp uses less power than a conventional one.

The LED light uses only 2 to 3 watts, and the levitation magnets use 4 watts.

The light emitted by the disc is equivalent to that of a 15- to 20-watt bulb.

The base price for a basic black or white Lunaluxx is 120 euros (S$170).

That rises to 150 euros if you want a colour other than the two basic ones.

Shipping the lamp costs 26 euros.

The Lunaluxx is definitely not a cheap lamp by any standard, but you do get a cool conversation piece.

Like any Kickstarter product, there's a chance the Lunaluxx won't make its target goal.

Currently, it has about 25,000 euros pledged, a far cry from the 65,000 euros the project is seeking.

Still, seeing as how the Kickstarter campaign has about 30 days to go, there's a good chance that the Lunaluxx will get funded.
