The Google Trips app is taking a permanent vacation on August 5

Google is ending support for the Google Trips app on 5 August, after which you'll no longer be able to use the app. That's a real pity too, since I find Trips to be one of the more useful travel apps around, especially given its ability to pull travel bookings directly from Gmail and suggest relevant things to do. All this information can even be downloaded to be accessed offline, which is particularly handy if you're travelling overseas on limited data.

That said, Google has published some tips for how you can replace some of Trips' features:

  • Searching for 'My Trips' on Google (or going to google.com/travel) will call up a listing of your upcoming reservations, which will give you a page tracking your flights, things to do at your destination, saved places, and eventually, any research you've done for the trip. You'll also be able to edit your trip details here.
  • Some Google Trips features will be available in Maps as well. In Maps, simply tap on the 'Explore' tab or search for a destination to find suggestions for things to do. Your saved places will be accessible in Maps as well. In addition, you'll be able to view your upcoming reservations soon, which you can view by navigating to Menu> Your places > Upcoming. They'll also be automatically available offline, so you don't have to manually download them.

The new Trips page is basically a replacement for the standalone app, where you can view past and upcoming trips, popular destinations, and even travel suggestions based on your recent activity that are lumped under the header 'Potential trips'.

The latter section also comes with prompts to 'Continue planning', and clicking that will take you to a page that tracks things like what you've saved, any prices or flights you're tracking, and your recent searches. You'll also be given a selection of travel articles relevant to your destination, along with further information on popular activities, restaurants, the weather, and even upcoming events.

But while the new Trips site may not feel quite as convenient as having a dedicated app, it does manage to port over most of the key features. That said, what I'll probably miss the most is the ability to download and access all that information offline.
