RED (officially Red Digital Cinema Camera Company) announced their Hydrogen One smartphone in the wee hours this morning. According to their press release, The Hydrogen One will have a 'holographic' display.
The smartphone has a 5.7-inch screen that can seamlessly switch from regular 2D content to various content types: holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games. The phone also supports their proprietary RED Hydrogen 4-View content (.H4V file format), 3D VR, AR, and MR (mixed reality).
From its panel of display technologies, it's clear that the phone will handle most of its trickery from a 2D perspective, and it won't actually project holograms à la Princess Leia's message from the original Star Wars trilogy.
Not content with only multi-view visuals, the Hydrogen One will also have an H3O algorithm that converts stereo sound to virtual surround sound - the statement indicated it as "5.1 on your headphones".
Like the Moto Z smartphones, the Hydrogen One will also be a modular device that uses a components system. The official stock image of the product featured similar-looking pins lined across the phone's rear, and possible modular attachments will support "higher quality motion and still images", among other promises. However, no modules will be available at launch.
Since it's created by RED, the Hydrogen One will also support the professional RED camera programme, such as Scarlet, Epic, and Weapon - which are DSMC1 and DSMC2 camera bodies from the RED product line ("DSMC" stands for Digital Stills and Motion Camera). The phone will act as the preview monitor and user interface for said cameras.
As a smartphone, the Hydrogen One will be using Android OS (version unspecified) as its operating system, with a modified UI skinned by RED. On it, there will be a USB-C charging port, a MicroSD card slot. Other details, such as display resolution, camera specs, and battery capacity have yet to be released.
The Hydrogen One by RED comes in two variants - an aluminium version that retails at US$1,195 (~S$ 1652.24) and a titanium version going for US$1,595 (~S$2205.29). It is accepting pre-orders with an expected shipping date of Q1 2018.
