It’s safe to say that it’s been a rather exciting 24 hours in the Malaysian political landscape.

Amid fiery speculations that a new ruling coalition is being formed, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned from his role, only to be appointed by the Malaysian King as interim prime minister until a new head of government is appointed.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) — the ruling coalition of parties that ousted former prime minister Najib Razak’s United Malays National Organisation — is in tatters. Dr Mahathir’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has left the PH alliance. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat has quit the coalition as well to form an independent bloc.

It is believed that Dr Mahathir plans to ditch Anwar Ibrahim — the initial PM-in-waiting — and form a new government. Despite having expressed his intentions to stand down and retire, it’s unclear if the 94-year-old will ever do soon. Regardless, the entire drama has already been gauged as Malaysia's biggest betrayal in history.

But as worrying the situation may be for Malaysia right now (during an ongoing coronavirus outbreak), political turmoil makes it ripe for memes. Political games played by those in power are tiring for the public, and the Internet has bloomed with dank humour about the current climate.

Take a gander at some of ‘em below.
