Japanese ministry eyes ultra-fast 5G communication system by 2020

The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to put, first in the world, the fifth-generation communication system for mobile phones into practical use before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The ministry will include related research and development expenses in its budget request for fiscal 2015. According to sources, the ministry will also set up a council comprising cell phone operators, electronics makers and academic experts by the end of this year to promote research and development of the 5G system.

The 5G system will offer a communication speed that is about 100 times faster than current Long Term Evolution, or LTE, technology.
