M1 takes fight to MyRepublic with its $49 fiber broadband 1Gbps package

M1 on Friday rolled out a new 1Gbps fibre broadband package that will see it go head-to-head with MyRepublic.

Available with a two-year contract at a monthly subscription of S$49, M1's 1Gbps fiber broadband plan is slightly cheaper than MyRepublic's Ultra 1Gbps package at S$49.99/month.

M1 is also offering several freebies which include:

Free Dect Phone worth $58 (Online Exclusive Promotion)
FREE Mobile Broadband (1GB)
FREE Home Fixed Voice Service
FREE ONT Activation (up to $58.85)
FREE 3 months' subscription to Internet Security
FREE Termination Point Installation (up to $235.40) if you missed OpenNet's free installation
FREE 12 months' MiBox subscription (24 months contract)
FREE 24 months' Static IP subscription

In comparison, MyRepublic's Ultra package offers video streaming priority, no BitTorrent blocking, $58 service installation, free $100 new router discount, free 3 months Home Voice Plus, free 3 months teleport and 24/7 technical support.

In terms of typical download speeds, M1 states that its plan generally delivers between 657.3 to 804.6Mbps 80 per cent of the time based on its testing time frame from April to June 2014. On the other hand, MyRepublic offers up to 1Gbps download speeds and up to 500Mbps upload speeds with no throttling.

The competition in the fiber broadband market is increasing as telcos compete with one another to offer the best deals for consumers.

In May, StarHub offered a dual-network home broadband package for just $69.90/month, which includes a 500Mbps fiber broadband connection and a 100Mbps cable broadband connection.

SingTel recently introduced its Unlimited Fiber plan that promises no traffic throttling and speeds of up to 800Mbps for local connections 95 per cent of the time.
