Marvel's Avengers game won’t have loot box mechanics and can be played offline

The new Avengers game won't require online play, confirmed developer Crystal Dynamics.

While Marvel's Avengers will let players team up online to complete missions, it remains optional and the title will still let people enjoy it solo if they'd prefer.

Boss Scott Amos told GamesIndustryBiz: "We want somebody to be able to go buy a disc and never have to go online. You don't have to. You can have a complete experience and have fun."

However, for those who do want to delve into the online experience, publisher Square Enix has promised a robust and evolving experience with free DLC.

"The idea, from the beginning, is that we want you to be able to customise your hero; how they look, how they play, the gear they have and how they use it,” he added.

"Your Black Widow could be different from my Black Widow — just a little, maybe a lot, depending on what you favour and how you unlock things."

Speaking of unlocking, Amos also assured that the game won’t feature “gameplay paywalls” or loot box mechanics. Nonetheless, there’ll still be extensive customisation options via microtransactions, explained the game’s creative director Noah Hughes.

Speaking to WCCF Tech, Hughes explained that no characters and areas will be locked behind a paywall, while decorative personalisations on armour, weapons, and skins will have no extra advantage in the game itself.

Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that despite backlash over the characters models — created for the game and not based on actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the team won't be bowing to pressure over a redesign, declared fellow Crystal Dynamics director Shaun Escayg.

Despite the lukewarm reception Marvel’s Avengers received after its official reveal at E3, it’ll be exciting to see how the game will turn out — especially after Crystal Dynamics managed to assemble a stellar creative team behind the scenes, including directors from Naughty Dog and EA, as well as talents who worked on God of War, Halo and Call of Duty.
