Shopping on mobile devices poised to overtake shopping on computers: Survey

SINGAPORE - With more and more people accessing the Internet via a smartphone or tablet, it is not surprising that nearly half of the people who made online purchases over the last six months did so with a mobile device.

According to a survey by Visa, 47 per cent of people who made online purchases over the last six months did so with a smartphone or tablet. That ratio is projected to swop around over the next year, with 53 per cent of people who make online purchases expected to do so with mobile devices.

Visa said in a statement today that "the survey findings show that Singaporean consumers are increasingly comfortable making purchases and payments with their mobile devices, and we expect this trend to continue."

It also said that, based on VisaNet data, growth of online commerce is double "that of face-to-face transactions in Singapore".

The most popular spending categories for transactions on mobile devices are air tickets, accomodation bookings and cinema tickets.

The survey also found that one in three online transactions are regularly abandoned, the most common categories for abandonment are cinema tickets, accommodation and fashion items less than $500.

The most common reasons for abandoning a transaction are slow page loading speed, problems with the transactions, and poorly designed sites that are difficult to navigate. Users most commonly abandon transactions on smartphones.
