Wireless speaker leader Sonos does it differently from most other makers. Instead of Bluetooth connectivity, it uses Wi-Fi to stream music.
While the Play 1 can be used singly, its forte lies in its ability to link up and operate in tandem with multiple Play speakers, to offer synchronised playback around the home and extending into a 5.1 set-up.
With no built-in battery, the Play 1 is not portable. Without the Sonos Bridge accessory, the Play 1 also needs to be connected to your router for any of its features to work.
Set-up via the iOS or Android app is a breeze. Music can then be streamed from a smartphone or from free radio apps.
Audio quality is strong and the system works best when paired with other Sonos speakers.
