Sony delays Chinese debut of PS4

SHANGHAI - Sony Computer Entertainment will postpone the release of its PlayStation 4 console in China from this coming Sunday.

The company announced the move Thursday. It did not give a reason but reportedly needs more time for final coordination with the authorities.

China had barred the sale of foreign game consoles since 2000 out of concern over their adverse impact on education. The government has now lifted the ban on the condition that foreign companies' consoles be produced in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone established in September 2013.

But some restrictions remain in place, such as the authorities reviewing and censoring software. SCE says it is making the necessary preparations so that it can swiftly get the machine into customers' hands.

Microsoft faced a similar issue in bringing the Xbox One to China. The release date, originally set for Sept. 23, was pushed back nearly a week to Sept. 29.
