Sony's first high-end X-series smartphone available on Oct 15 for $998

SINGAPORE - Sony's first high-end X-series phone, the Xperia XZ, will be released here on Oct 15 for $998 (no telco contract).

The X range is traditionally known for its mid-range phones, while Sony's more premium phone models fall under the Z series.

The Xperia XZ is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, with 64GB of internal storage and 3GB of system memory.

It has a 23-megapixel rear camera, with 4K video recording and five-axis image stabilisation.

Made of glass and metal, the Android 6.0 smartphone has an IP68 rating - meaning it can be submerged down to a depth of 1.5m for up to 30 minutes.

In addition, the mid-range Xperia X Compact Android 6.0 smartphone will be launched on Oct 15 as well at $648 (without contract).

The X Compact is the smaller 4.6-inch version of the 5-inch Xperia X ($848, without contract) which was released in May.

Both X and X Compact run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor. However, the X Compact has 32GB of internal storage and a 720p high-definition (HD) screen, while the X has 64GB of internal storage and a 1080p Full HD screen.
