Election eats: Late-night food and drinks after the polls

SINGAPORE - The general election period can be a divisive one, splitting Singaporeans along political affiliations and the ever-shifting electoral boundaries. But if there is one uniting force, it is food and the siren song of sinful supper. Here are supper joints near some designated assembly centres across the island that you can stop by to celebrate or commiserate on Polling Day.

North-west

ALIF RESTAURANT

Let it not be said that the newer neighbourhoods in north-west Singapore are bereft of supper joints. Alif is a 24-hour eatery just across Bukit Gombak MRT station, which serves everything from the savoury egg prata ($1.50) to sweet flavours such as chocolate and strawberry ($3). Wash everything down with a frothy cup of hot teh tarik ($1.20).

Where: 374 Bukit Batok Street 31, 01-204, near Bukit Gombak Stadium

Open: 24 hours

North-east

SURIYA CURRY HOUSE

Tucked away under the bustling Upper Serangoon Viaduct, this eatery, which serves roti john (from $3.50) and chapati ($1.30 a piece), among other dishes, is apparently a haunt for Workers' Party supporters, who flocked there to celebrate their landmark victories in the 2011 General Election. Not in the mood for greasy Indian fare? Next door, there is fishball mee pok ($4) at Song Kee fishball noodles (open from 7pm to about 2am).

Where: 536 Upper Serangoon Road, five minutes' drive from Serangoon Stadium

Open: 24 hours

North

AL-AMEEN EATING HOUSE

This modest eating house boasts a variety of dishes, from Western (fish and chips, $7) to Indian (tandoori chicken, $4.50) to local favourites (mutton murtabak, from $6).

Where: 30 Woodlands Avenue 1, near Woodlands Stadium

Open: 24 hours

South

SOON LI YONG TAU FOO

Only for those willing to brave the hordes of hungry suppergoers who swarm this stall for its famous yong tau foo (a Hakka dish of mixed vegetables, meat paste and tofu). Some less common ingredients here include pork belly, fish maw, pig stomach and sotong. Prices start from $8 a bowl.

Where: 01-78 Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre, 115 Bukit Merah View, near Delta Hockey Pitch

Open: Varies, usually from 10.30pm to 3.30am

East

FENGSHAN MARKET AND FOOD CENTRE

Better known as Bedok 85, this hawker centre is popular for its array of local supper staples - barbecued chicken wings, fried hokkien mee, sambal stingray, bak chor mee, carrot cake and orh luak (oyster omelette) .

Where: 85 Bedok North Street 4, near Bedok Stadium

Open: Till late, most stalls close by 2am

East

LION CITY FROG PORRIDGE

Despite its seedy reputation, Geylang remains a supper haven and Lion City has been consistently ranked as one of the top frog porridge places on the island for its tender frog meat ($8 for one frog) and thick porridge. If frog makes you squeamish, go across the street for the beef hor fun at Lor 9 Beef Kway Teow (open from 4.30pm to 2.30am) or swing by Wan Dou Sek (five minutes' walk away) for dim sum (126 Sims Avenue, open 24 hours).

Where: 235 Geylang Road Lorong 9, near the sports field bounded by Stadium Drive and Stadium Boulevard

Open: 5pm to 3.30am

Central

MING FA FISHBALL

At this stall, one of several eateries in Upper Thomson Road that open all night and into the early hours of the morning, visitors can choose from noodles served with meatballs (bak chor mee, from $3.50) or opt for prawns, fishballs or scallops. If you feel peckish for dessert, head next door for ice cream at either Udders or Salted Caramel (both open from noon to 2am).

Where: 246B Upper Thomson Road, 10 minutes' drive from Yio Chu Kang Stadium

Open: 9am to 5am

BOON LAY POWER NASI LEMAK

This nasi lemak has become so famous it has spawned outlets in Novena and Woodlands. But the original still packs a punch and attracts long queues. Lap up the Chicken Set B meal ($3) of coconut rice, chicken wing and fried egg with some sambal chilli.

Where: 221B Boon Lay Place, near Jurong West Stadium

Open: 5pm to 2am

Whatever your affiliation, one of the best things about election season is watching the results. Polls close at 8pm and results for sample counts for the 16 GRCs and 13 SMCs may be released from as early as 10pm tonight.

This process will go on till the wee hours. You can follow the news at home or, like many others, go out to a place with live screenings to shout with fellow voters at a television screen.

A range of options are available. Those who want good views on top of election coverage can go to the swanky bar lounge Empire on the 45th floor of the Singapore Land Tower.

For something more down-to- earth, hang out at The Recess in Guillemard Road, an events venue that will go into election mode tonight. You can buy food and drinks from its sister outlet, cafe-bar The Tuckshop, next door.
