Most ambitious crossover? Gfriend takes on 'Infinity War' at Singapore concert

One could be forgiven for thinking that they had a ticket for a comedy skit instead of a K-pop concert.

Members of K-pop girl group Gfriend left fans in stitches as they battled it out, a la Marvel Avengers no less, during their concert on Saturday (July 20) at the Star Theatre.

The three-hour concert was turned into a gag show at times, rife with weird antics and displays of wittiness as the six-member group returned for their second concert in Singapore after three years.

Gasps of surprise were heard from the crowd as the words 'Infinity War Gfriend, War of Masters' first appeared onscreen.

Fans of the Avengers would definitely not miss the small details linking the skit to the Marvel series, for example, when youngest member Umji 'magically' made her members disappear, just like Thanos' snap.

Even the members' non-stop bickering throughout the skit was reminiscent of the Avengers' banter in the movies.

But the hilarious parody ended with the forgone conclusion -- that the stage was where the members truly belonged.

Gfriend shone as they displayed their stable vocals and highly-synchronised moves they are known for in the K-pop industry.

The show started off with a flourish as confetti rained down on Buddies (what their fans are known) as Gfriend performed their hit song, Me Gusta Tu.

The entire crowd was also left in awe and hushed silence when they performed the ballad version of Rough. The lack of a backing track made the girls' melodic vocals and clear harmonisation stand out even more.

Gfriend also sang their hearts out during Hope, a song in which they composed their own lyrics to express their gratitude and affection to their fans.

FEVER PERFORMED FOR THE 1ST TIME DURING A CONCERT

There were other surprises in store for fans, as Gfriend performed their latest track, Fever, for the first time during a concert.

The group dropped their latest mini-album and music video for Fever on July 1, with the video so far amassing more than 13 million views on YouTube.

The performance appeared to be impromptu, after leader Sowon revealed a small surprise that she had prepared for the audience.

Through a translator, Sowon explained: "I really just went out there and asked (the concert directors) if it was possible."

Unfortunately, a technical glitch left the group singing and dancing without an instrumental track or stage effects, not that the fans minded, as they cheered them on enthusiastically nonetheless.

COMEDIC CHOPS

Someone give them a TV show already.

Besides the Avengers-themed skit, the girls displayed their comedic talent throughout the show.

At one point in the concert, Umji disappeared off stage and returned with plastic cups of water for the members. As she handed the drinks to her members, she playfully said: "I made it for them!"

In response, her members joked: "Umji's second job is a cook."

Gfriend also teased fans, with main vocalist Yuju stating: "You should be feeling hot. Because we filled this place with our hotness!"

There were touching moments as well.

After watching the fan video put together by Singapore Buddies, some of the girls teared up as they thanked their fans.

One Buddy could not bear to see lead vocalist Eunha crying and she raced down the aisle just to pass a packet of tissue paper directly to her idol.

The sweet gesture cheered Eunha up, with her remarking that the tissue "looks like it smells good".

With their ability to connect with the audience through their catchy music and entertaining personalities, it is clear why Gfriend has also caught the eye of British broadcaster BBC to star in their upcoming documentary about K-pop.

Special thanks to Unusual Entertainment for the invite.
