Too ugly for Chinese people? Marvel star Simu Liu hits back at video judging his looks

As Marvel's newest leading man and the star of Hollywood's first Asian-led superhero film, Simu Liu's looks have now been picked apart mercilessly by netizens.

While the Kim's Convenience star may be a heartthrob in Hollywood, some Chinese netizens were less than impressed with him.

The latest blow came in the form of a video by YouTube channel Asian Boss titled: "Is The Asian Lead For Marvel 'Too Ugly' For Chinese People?"

The nine-minute long video, released on Aug 8, features people on the streets of China sharing their opinions on the 30-year-old actor's looks.

And they certainly did not hold back.

One woman rated Simu a solid 3.5 out of 10 and followed up by saying that he looks old-fashioned.

Another said that Simu looks like he would be good at scamming people.

A third woman said in Chinese, "He doesn't meet my standards of what a handsome man should look like."

Ouch. What a tough crowd.

When asked for their thoughts on his casting as the Marvel superhero Shang-Chi, one of the women said, "When foreign filmmakers cast actors for an Asian role, they usually cast those that we don't find attractive.

"We don't think the actor is that good-looking yet he represents the Chinese by starring in the film."

The main consensus in the video is that Simu does not satisfy the Chinese standards of beauty.

So what does it take to be considered good-looking in China? According to the video, you need prominent features, big eyes and a small face a la Taiwanese actor Eddie Peng.

Liu took to Facebook to respond to the video, brushing off the harsh comments.

"I'm still doing my thing, and I'm still over the moon happy I get this amazing opportunity," he wrote.

"I'm not going (to let) a few voices of doubt ruin that for me, and neither should you, in whatever you are pursuing in your life."

Many netizens left comments in support of Simu and slammed the video.

Does Hollywood only cast Asians that fit a "stereotypical Asian look"? We scoured around and found some rather diverse, rather beautiful leading men:
