Fandi, Sundram to take on Liverpool legends

THEY were outclassed by Liverpool's legends at last year's IG Masters Sixes tournament.

But come Nov 15, the Republic's ex-internationals will have a chance to exact revenge on the Merseyside alumni for that 0-5 loss. Led by Fandi Ahmad, V. Sundramoorthy and Aleksandar Duric, the former Lions will take on the Reds veterans at the Jalan Besar Stadium in The Castlewood Group Liverpool Masters.

The one-off, 11-a-side match marks a change from the earlier multi-team, six-a-side format.

"This year, following the World Cup and feedback from sponsors and the public, we felt that it was timely to stage an 11-a-side, full-field match," explained Masters Football Asia company director Ian Holahan.

Former fan favourites Robbie Fowler, Patrik Berger, Stephane Henchoz and Vladimir Smicer have all confirmed their return to the Republic, after tasting Sixes success last year.

They are likely to be joined by Steve McManaman and Phil Babb - both of whom last visited these shores in 2012.

"I've played here on a few occasions and Singaporeans never cease to amaze me with their passion and knowledge of the English Premier League and Liverpool," said former Liverpool and England striker Fowler, 39.

"The fans make me feel so welcome and it really pleases me to be able to play with my fellow Reds against Singapore football heroes... I cannot wait to return to one of my favourite Asian cities."

In addition to watching the Liverpool legends in action, fans will also have several opportunities to get up close and personal with Fowler and Co.

Those who purchase their tickets online, for example, are eligible for a lucky draw where the winners will get to have lunch with both sides, travel with them to the stadium and watch the match from the team bench.

More promotions will be announced in the coming months, with Masters Football Asia chief executive officer Steve Black looking "to deliver a world-class match that remains accessible for all football fans in Singapore".

"With our added incentives this year, we hope this is one match the fans will never forget," he said.

Tickets for The Castlewood Group Liverpool Masters cost between $7 and $30 and are available at TicketBooth outlets islandwide or online at ticketbooth.com.sg
