Best thing I ate this week: Yuzu Salmon and Mushrooms Tendon

'Best thing I ate' is a series where we share the best things we have eaten around Singapore. Read more here.

What: Yuzu Salmon and Mushrooms Tendon ($17.50++)

Where: Kohaku Tendon, Eat at Seven, 3 Temasek Boulevard #03-311, Suntec City Mall

If you're a fan of tempura, you'll be delighted by the latest offering by Kohaku Tendon.

At a recent media tasting, I had the chance to try Kohaku's new Yuzu Salmon and Mushrooms Tendon (tempura donburi) that is available from now until December.

A dish that's inspired by the autumn season, this tendon has a generous serving of tasty tempura heaped on top of a bed of fluffy rice.

You can take your pick from Hokkaido white rice or the nutritious 16-grain rice harvested from all over Japan, at no extra charge.

There are also two types of homemade sauces to choose from - spicy and non-spicy.

Although the ingredients are all coated with the same tempura batter, each type of mushroom - shiitake, maitake, shimeji, enoki, erinji, and oyster - offers a different texture.

Accompanying the mushrooms are two juicy prawns and a slice of Atlantic salmon that's marinated with traditional yuan sauce made from soy sauce, sake, yuzu juice and kabosu (a citrus fruit that's popular in Japan).

And once the dish is served, do dig in quickly to enjoy the tempura while they're warm and crispy.

The tendon is flavourful, not overly greasy, and best enjoyed with a glass of iced green tea ($2 with free refills).

At $17.50++, this seasonal offering is great value for money, considering ladies may have some difficulty finishing the hearty tempura portions.

And judging from the lunchtime queue outside the eatery on a weekday, do try to go there early as we heard that Kohaku will be dishing out only 100 servings of Yuzu Salmon and Mushrooms Tendon daily.

Now, please excuse me while I digest my lunch.
