Former CNB chief 'retires'

SINGAPORE - Nearly a year after he was acquitted of corruption, former top cop Ng Boon Gay has been "retired" from the civil service.

Responding to queries from The New Paper, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the decision on Wednesday followed the end of internal civil service disciplinary proceedings.

"(The) Public Service Commission (PSC) has decided to retire Mr Ng Boon Gay in the public interest with effect from Jan 29, 2014," an MHA spokesman said.

The ex-Central Narcotics Bureau chief was accused of corruption in 2012 for awarding contracts in exchange for sexual favours.

The trial that followed gripped the nation with its details, including text messages between Mr Ng and former IT sales manager Cecilia Sue. He was found not guilty on Feb 14 last year.

After that, he was subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings within the civil service.

Suspended

The holder of a PSC scholarship, which is only awarded to the brightest students, he was interdicted in January 2012. This meant that he was suspended from duty and part of his pay was docked.

When TNP contacted Mr Ng, 47, on Wednesday, he sounded tired. "There's nothing (more) from me," he said before telling this reporter "Happy New Year".
