Conjoined twins have only one functioning heart

KUALA TERENGGANU - Scans showed newly-born conjoined twins Nor Shazwanie dan Nor Shazrinie Zullkifli have two hearts but could only use one as the other was deformed.

Their father, Zullkifli Ngah, 41, said he was told of the findings by doctors at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) yesterday.

The twins were currently being monitored by the HKL Paediatrics Surgery Department chief Datuk Dr Zakaria Zahari after they were transferred from the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) here on Monday night

Dr Zakaria is the country's foremost paediatrics specialist and had led the team of surgeons who separated conjoined twins Nur Badrishah and Nur Bahiyah Norhisyam in 2008.

Zullkifli said the full report on the twins would be available on Friday.

"Doctors said my twins share that one heart as the second one is deformed and they are currently using breathing apparatus, and fed infant formula through tubes."
