MALACCA - A former nurse was yesterday sentenced to two months' jail and fined RM3,000 by the magistrate's court in Ayer Keroh for concealing the birth of a child and secretly disposing of it.
Tai Muk Lien, 25, of Pondok Batang Asahan, Jasin, who worked at a private hospital, was crying when magistrate Ida Rahayu Sharif passed the sentence.
She admitted delivering a baby and concealing its birth before disposing of its body at Pangsapuri Tun Sri Lanang, Pengkalan Rama, about 2.30pm on Aug 2 last year.
Tai's counsel, Royalina Faudzi Jushua from the State Legal Aid Bureau, told the court that the accused was now married.
"This is her first offence and she has saved the court's time and cost by pleading guilty."
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shazwani Ishak urged the court to impose a suitable sentence as the act committed by Tai was inhumane.
Ida Rahayu sentenced the accused and ordered the jail term to begin from yesterday. She ordered Tai to be jailed another three months if she did not settle the fine.
It was reported in August last year that police had found the baby's body in a dumpster at the apartment in Pengkalan Rama, while the head, which had snapped during birth, had been flushed down a toilet.
