Getting shots, not masks, best shot for avoiding flu

TAIPEI - Facial masks alone cannot stop the transmission of influenza, according to health experts, who recommend that the public follow other hygiene tips to stay healthy during the winter holiday season.

It is easy to contract all kinds of communicable diseases during the Lunar New Year holiday, a time when people have increased interaction with friends and family at home and abroad, said Chen Fang-chun, a family medicine doctor at Taipei City Hospital.

While many think a mask can block the infiltration of viruses, Chen warned that such is not the case.

"Masks offer some protection against airborne viruses, but they are not 100-per cent effective," said Chen.
