Stomach bypass patients tell their weight loss stories

China - Formerly obese people who have undergone stomach bypass surgical treatment gathered in Kaohsiung yesterday to tell their weight loss stories.

"My waist has shrunk from 50 inches to 25 - that definitely gives me self-confidence," Chen Ya-ping said.

Chen said she shed 64 kilograms after having stomach the bypass surgery at E-Da Hospital in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

The hospital arranged the gathering of its formerly obese patients to share their experiences of stomach bypass treatment and how to maintain their weight after the surgery.

Chen, who is a teacher, showed the skirt she used to wear when her waist was 50 inches, and told how she regained happiness and confidence after her weight more han halved, down from 120 kg to her current 56 kg.

She said the biggest reward is that she now feels closer to her students.

In the past her students were seldom willing to talk to her, but now they have normal interactions with one another and strong student-teacher bonds.

She said she also has a boyfriend now.

Another former patient, Shen Chu-en, said he was 167 kg before the treatment, but is now only 85 kg.

Shen said he no longer feels depressed because of the weight, and his next move is to build up his muscles.

Huang Chi-kun, director of E-Da's weight-loss and diabetes center, said stomach bypass surgery is generally meant for overweight people who are above 80 or 90 kilograms.

The treatment is also helpful in preventing high blood pressure and heart problems, he said.
