Taiwanese man gets serious disease from picking nose

A man in Tainan, southern Taiwan, recently suffered septic pulmonary embolism simply because of picking his nose. However, he was finally cured after his doctor used thoracentesis to draw out lung abscess.

Yu Hao-chang, an ear, nose and throat doctor at the Chi Mei Hospital in Liuying District of Tainan, said yesterday that a male patient, aged over 60, recently came to the hospital for medical treatment of the cellulitis on his nose.

After initial treatment, the cellulitis failed to improve and the patient even suffered chest tightness and panic a few days later.

After receiving computerized tomography, the patient's lungs were found to be suppurating, proving to be a kind of septic pulmonary embolism, Yu said.
